Bazoulé is a small village roughly 30 kilometers from Ouagadougou, deeply rooted in animist traditions. The main draw is a large pond inhabited by over a hundred Nile crocodiles. According to local legend, these crocodiles saved the village's ancestors during a drought, and they are now considered sacred, harmless protectors. Guides entice the crocodiles out of the water with live chickens, allowing visitors to approach and even sit on them. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dry savanna and agricultural fields. The village relies on farming, and the local economy is partially supported by the eco-tourism generated by the crocodile pond. Simple local meals can be arranged, but most tourists return to Ouagadougou for dining and accommodation. The site is easily reached by car or taxi from the capital, making it a popular half-day excursion. The dry season from November to April is convenient for visits, as the receding water levels make the crocodiles more concentrated and visible on the banks. An annual festival in late October celebrates the bond between the villagers and the reptiles.
