Sissili Forest (Burkina Faso)

Weather…

The Sissili Forest (Forêt Classée de la Sissili) is located in southern Burkina Faso in the province of the same name, covering an area of approximately 32,700 hectares. This protected area is of international significance, as it forms a central part of the biological corridor connecting national parks in Burkina Faso with those in Ghana. Geographically, the forest is characterized by a Sudano-Guinean savanna landscape, dominated by massive baobabs and shea trees (karité). The forest is particularly renowned for its role as a migration route for African elephants traveling between the Nazinga Game Ranch and Mole National Park in Ghana. Since its official designation as a protected forest in 1953, the area has been extensively researched to better understand the dynamics of savanna ecosystems. In addition to elephants, the forest is home to various species of antelope, warthogs, and a rich variety of birdlife. Today, forest management often involves local communities to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources. Threats such as illegal farming and poaching are countered through increased patrols and cross-border cooperation. The Sissili region is also considered one of the most important areas for shea butter production, derived from the fruits of the trees growing within the forest.
