Zlatograd is the southernmost town in Bulgaria, located in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains near the Greek border. The town is famous for its unique Ethnographic Compass Complex, which meticulously preserves the architecture and traditional crafts of the Bulgarian National Revival period. Historically, Zlatograd was a significant hub for textile manufacturing and tobacco production during the 18th and 19th centuries. The old town features distinctive houses with white-washed walls and round chimneys, representing a local architectural style found nowhere else. It is also home to the oldest church in the Rhodopes, St. George, established in 1834. The town's modern relevance has grown with the opening of a border crossing in 2010, providing a strategic link to the Aegean coast. Geographically, the area is defined by the Varbitsa River valley, enjoying a mild climate that supports diverse flora.
