Sarnitsa is a town in southwestern Bulgaria, located in the Pazardzhik Province in the heart of the Western Rhodope Mountains. The town is spectacularly situated on the shores of the Dospat Reservoir, one of the largest and highest-altitude dams in the country. Geographically, Sarnitsa is notable for its elevation of over 1,200 meters and its surrounding dense coniferous forests. The settlement was granted town status as recently as 2003 and became the administrative center of its own municipality in 2015. Economically, the region is heavily reliant on wood processing and tourism, with fishing and water sports on the reservoir being major draws for visitors. The history of the settlement is closely tied to forestry and traditional mountain livestock breeding. Due to its alpine climate, winters in Sarnitsa are long and snowy, while summers remain cool and refreshing, making it a popular retreat from the summer heat.
