The Kamchiya Reserve is located at the mouth of the Kamchiya River where it flows into the Black Sea, about 25 kilometers south of Varna. Established in 1951, it was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1977. The area is world-renowned for its 'longoz' forests, rare floodplain forests characterized by dense lianas and near-tropical vegetation that are periodically inundated by the river. The flora includes over 40 tree species, such as ash, oak, and elm, along with numerous rare aquatic plants. The fauna is equally diverse, hosting over 200 bird species and a wide variety of fish and reptiles. The reserve serves as a vital sanctuary for the European otter and several endangered tortoise species.
