Kalofer is a historically significant town in central Bulgaria, positioned at the foot of Botev Peak, the highest summit in the Balkan Mountains. The town is most famous as the birthplace of the legendary poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev, whose childhood home is now a major national museum. Founded in the 16th century, Kalofer served as a stronghold of Bulgarian spirit and resistance during the Ottoman period. A unique global tradition of the town is Kalofer lace, a fine needlework technique originally derived from Brussels and perfected by local women over generations. Every winter on January 6th, the town hosts the famous "icy horo," where men dressed in traditional folk costumes dance in the freezing waters of the Tundzha River to celebrate Epiphany. Kalofer is the primary gateway for hikers exploring the Central Balkan National Park and climbing Botev Peak. The surrounding wilderness features remarkable waterfalls and ancient beech forests that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. The town has successfully preserved its authentic atmosphere and ancient customs for centuries.
