Ancient Stara Zagora, once known as Augusta Traiana, was one of the most significant urban centers in the Roman province of Thrace. It was founded in the early 2nd century AD by Emperor Trajan on the site of an earlier Thracian settlement. The heart of the ancient city features an impressive forum with an odeon, which is still utilized for cultural performances today. Archaeological evidence reveals a high degree of urbanization, including paved streets, advanced water supply systems, and luxurious villas adorned with intricate mosaics. Of particular note are the Roman thermal baths and the substantial remains of the defensive walls. Stara Zagora is also home to prehistoric Neolithic Dwellings, considered among the oldest and best-preserved in Europe, dating back over 8,000 years. This continuity of human habitation makes the city a remarkable showcase of historical layers. Today, many ancient artifacts are on display at the Regional History Museum, which was uniquely constructed directly over the excavated ruins.
