Cananéia
Cananéia, situated on the southern coast of São Paulo state, is recognized as one of the oldest European settlements in Brazil. Officially founded in 1531 by Martim Afonso de Sousa, it disputes with São Vicente the title of the first town established in the country, with some records suggesting an even earlier presence from 1502. The town's early history is deeply intertwined with maritime explorations and the initial encounters between Europeans and indigenous peoples. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Cananéia thrived as a significant shipbuilding center and a port for regional agricultural trade. The historic center features well-preserved colonial buildings constructed using traditional stone and lime techniques. The municipality is located within the Atlantic Forest South-East Reserves, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its exceptional biodiversity. Today, Cananéia is celebrated for its oyster production and ecotourism, maintaining a peaceful atmosphere that reflects its long history as a coastal outpost. Its isolation over the centuries has played a crucial role in preserving both its architectural heritage and its pristine natural surroundings.
