Luz Station (Brazil)

Weather…

Luz Station (Estação da Luz) is a premier architectural landmark in São Paulo and a symbol of the city's economic boom during the coffee era. The current building, inaugurated in 1901, was designed in a Victorian style with its entire steel framework prefabricated in England before being shipped to Brazil. Its iconic clock tower, inspired by London's Big Ben, served as a welcoming sight for millions of immigrants arriving in the early 20th century to work on coffee plantations. For decades, it was the main hub for the São Paulo Railway, connecting the interior of the state to the port of Santos. Following a significant fire in 1946, the station underwent extensive restoration and now houses the Museum of the Portuguese Language alongside its transport functions. The monumental iron and glass shed is a masterpiece of industrial architecture, reflecting the prestige and technical ambition of São Paulo at the turn of the century.
