Guarulhos is the second most populous city in the state of São Paulo and a critical logistical hub for South America. Founded on December 8, 1560, by Jesuit priest Manuel de Paiva, it began as a defensive settlement to protect against indigenous raids. During the 19th century, the region was known for small-scale gold mining before evolving into a major industrial power during the 20th century. The city's global importance skyrocketed in 1985 with the opening of the São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), now the busiest airport in Brazil and a primary gateway to the continent. Geographically, Guarulhos is seamlessly integrated into the São Paulo metropolitan area. The local economy is driven by logistics, food processing, and metallurgy. Despite its industrial focus, the city contains significant natural reserves, such as portions of the Cantareira State Park, preserving vital remnants of the Atlantic Forest.
