Bertioga
The city attracts visitors with a mix of historical sites, upscale resorts, and indigenous culture. Forte São João is the oldest fortress in Brazil, constructed by the Portuguese to defend the early coastline. Beyond the historical center, the Riviera de São Lourenço district provides a highly urbanized and planned beach environment with luxury condominiums, a shopping mall, and a golf course. More than 80% of Bertioga's territory is environmentally protected, allowing for ecotourism activities such as hiking the Guaratuba trail or canoeing in the Jaguareguava river. The city borders the Ribeirão Silveira Indigenous Land, where the Guarani community maintains traditional farming and crafts. Seafood restaurants along the central canal serve the local specialty, tainha fish, which has a dedicated festival in July. The city is situated just 100 kilometers from São Paulo, making it a heavily visited weekend destination. Access is via the modern Mogi-Bertioga highway, which descends the steep Serra do Mar mountain range. The summer months from December to February are extremely busy and hot, while autumn provides quieter beaches and milder temperatures.
