São Miguel das Missões (Brazil)

Weather…

The ruins of São Miguel das Missões in the state of Rio Grande do Sul are the most significant remains of the Jesuit Guarani reductions in Brazil. Originally founded in 1632, the mission was relocated to its current site in 1687 following attacks by slave hunters known as bandeirantes. The monumental cathedral, designed by Italian architect Gian Battista Primoli and built between 1735 and 1745, is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture with indigenous stylistic elements. At its peak, the reduction housed nearly 7,000 residents who lived within a sophisticated social and economic system managed by the Jesuits. Following the Treaty of Madrid in 1750 and the subsequent Guarani War, the Jesuits were expelled and the missions were eventually abandoned. Today, the ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 1983, and represent a unique period of cultural and religious synthesis. The on-site museum holds a valuable collection of wooden statues carved by the Guarani people under Jesuit guidance. A nightly sound and light show narrates the tragic and grand history of the missions.
