The Gcwihaba Caves, also recognized as Drotsky’s Caves, are located in the remote North West District of Botswana within the Kalahari Desert. These labyrinthine dolomite caverns were formed over millions of years by groundwater action, resulting in an extraordinary display of stalactites and stalagmites. Beyond their geological allure, the caves hold significant archaeological weight, as excavations have yielded Late Stone Age tools and animal fossils indicating ancient human occupation. For the indigenous San people, Gcwihaba remains a sacred site steeped in spiritual legend and traditional folklore. The first recorded European to visit the caves was farmer Martinus Drotsky in 1934, leading to its colloquial English name. The cave system features two distinct levels with multiple chambers connected by narrow passages, supporting a unique ecosystem that includes several rare species of cave-dwelling bats.
