Okavango Wetlands (Botswana)

Weather…

The Okavango Delta in northern Botswana is one of the world's largest inland deltas and was named the 1000th UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014. The ecosystem is formed by the Okavango River, which originates in Angola and dissipates into the Kalahari Desert sands instead of reaching the sea. Annually, approximately 11 cubic kilometers of water flow into the delta, leading to a massive expansion of the wetlands during the dry season from June to August. This seasonal flooding attracts an enormous density of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and rare antelope species like the red lechwe. The area covers between 15,000 and 22,000 square kilometers, depending on the season's water levels. Geographically, the delta is characterized by a complex network of channels, lagoons, and islands often shaped by termite mounds and hippo trails. Protecting this sensitive habitat is crucial for the survival of numerous endangered species in Southern Africa.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from May to October is optimal as animals gather around remaining water sources. During the rainy season (November to April) the wetlands are flooded and wildlife viewing is only possible from boats.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and dusk are the best times to watch birds and mammals at the waterholes. During the midday heat most animals retreat into the shade.
📜
Etiquette
Stay quiet and avoid sudden movements to avoid spooking wildlife. Do not feed animals and keep your distance, especially from hippos and crocodiles, which can be dangerous.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars and a waterproof camera bag are recommended as wetlands are often misty or damp. Lightweight, quick-drying clothing and rubber boots or waterproof shoes make moving around easier.
🧭
Getting there
The Okavango wetlands are best accessed from Maun by light aircraft or off-road vehicle. Many camps offer transfers; advance booking is essential during peak season.
🦌
What to expect
Wildlife density can vary in the wetlands - sometimes much patience is needed to find rare species. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and birdlife, even if large mammals stay hidden.
