Xudum Delta

The Xudum Delta is a prominent and ecologically diverse subsystem of the greater Okavango Delta in northwestern Botswana, situated in its southwestern reaches. Fed by the Xudum distributary channel, this area experiences dramatic seasonal transformations as floodwaters from the Angolan highlands arrive between May and August, turning dry grasslands into a lush aquatic mosaic. The landscape is defined by deep permanent channels, expansive papyrus swamps, and numerous small islands often stabilized by leadwood trees and ilala palms. The Xudum region is particularly celebrated for its exceptional predator sightings, including high densities of lions and leopards, alongside significant populations of red lechwe and Cape buffalo. As an integral component of the Okavango Delta UNESCO World Heritage site, Xudum is managed under strict conservation protocols to protect its unique inland drainage system. The area represents a critical intersection of permanent water and seasonal floodplains, providing a year-round refuge for wildlife in the heart of the semi-arid Kalahari Basin.
