San Rafael de Velasco Jesuit Mission (Bolivia)

Weather…

The San Rafael de Velasco Jesuit Mission was founded in 1696, making it the second oldest mission in the Chiquitos region. The present church was constructed between 1747 and 1749 under the direction of the Swiss Jesuit Martin Schmid, a multitalented architect and musician. The building is noted for its impressive scale and the use of massive wooden columns that support the vast roof structure. A unique feature of its interior is the series of paintings on wood panels that depict biblical scenes within a local South American context. The pulpit and the main altar are masterpieces of woodworking, reflecting the fusion of European Baroque styles with indigenous craftsmanship. Like other missions in the area, San Rafael was carefully restored in the 1970s by Hans Roth. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, it continues to preserve the profound musical and spiritual legacy of the Jesuit era for future generations.
