Temple of Pythons (Benin)

Weather…

The Temple of Pythons in Ouidah is one of Benin's most significant religious sites and a central sanctuary of the Voodoo faith. It is dedicated to Dangbé, the sacred python deity, revered in local tradition as a symbol of fertility, protection, and wisdom. According to legend, the cult dates back to the 18th century when a local ruler sought refuge in a forest during a war and was protected by pythons. Within the temple's central chamber, approximately 50 to 60 royal pythons are housed; they are cared for by priests and allowed to roam freely throughout the sacred grounds. These snakes are considered harmless and holy; harming or killing them is strictly forbidden. Once every seven years, a major purification ceremony is held where the pythons are ritually honored. The temple stands directly across from the Catholic Basilica of Ouidah, illustrating the peaceful coexistence of traditional African beliefs and Christianity in modern Benin. Visitors can tour the site to learn about the complex symbolism and the centuries-old rituals that continue to be practiced by the local community.
