Sacred Forest of Kpassè (Benin)

Weather…

The Sacred Forest of Kpassè is located in the heart of Ouidah in southern Benin, covering an area of approximately two hectares. It is deeply connected to the city's founding legend, stating that King Kpassè fled here in the 14th century to escape his pursuers. According to oral tradition, the king transformed himself into an iroko tree, which is still venerated today as a sacred living symbol. The forest houses numerous statues depicting Voodoo deities, each representing different facets of existence and natural forces. Despite the surrounding urbanization of Ouidah, this small forest patch remains an inviolable spiritual sanctuary for the local community. The vegetation features massive, ancient trees and dense undergrowth that maintains a distinct microclimate. The site serves as both a religious center and a historical monument to the cultural continuity of the Xwéda Kingdom.
