Museum Plantin-Moretus (Belgium)

Weather…

The Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp is a prestigious cultural institution and the only museum in the world designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is housed in the original 16th-century residence and printing works of Christophe Plantin, the leading printer and publisher of his era. The business, known as the Officina Plantiniana, remained in the hands of the Moretus family for over 300 years until it was sold to the city of Antwerp in 1876. The museum preserves the two oldest surviving printing presses in the world, dating back to around 1600. Its vast collections include over 30,000 rare books, original copperplates, and extensive archives that provide a comprehensive record of European social and economic history. The historic rooms are richly decorated and feature numerous portraits by Peter Paul Rubens, who was a close associate of the family. The site features an unparalleled look at the technological evolution of printing and the intellectual life of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
