Fort Breendonk (Belgium)

Weather…

Fort Breendonk, located near Willebroek, is one of the most significant and well-preserved military fortifications and memorial sites in Europe. Constructed between 1906 and 1913 as part of the National Redoubt protecting Antwerp, it was originally designed for conventional warfare. However, during the German occupation of Belgium in World War II, it was repurposed by the SS as a transit and detention camp starting in September 1940. It housed approximately 3,590 prisoners over four years, including political dissidents, resistance members, and Jews awaiting deportation. The inmates were subjected to brutal forced labor, severe malnutrition, and systematic torture within its thick concrete walls. Unlike many other sites, Breendonk remains almost exactly as it was when liberated in 1944. Since 1947, it has served as a National Memorial, educating visitors about the dark realities of the Nazi regime and the resilience of those imprisoned there.
