Sumqayit lies about thirty kilometres north-west of Baku directly on the Caspian shore and, with nearly three hundred thousand residents, is the third-largest city in Azerbaijan. The settlement was founded in 1949 as a Soviet planned town for the petrochemical industry and quickly became one of the most important industrial centres of the USSR. Today the city is known for extensive modernisation and environmental remediation; a high-tech industrial park has been created with chemical, steel and aluminium plants. The kilometre-long seaside promenade with fountains, sculptures and palm trees invites families for evening strolls. Notable sights include the modern Heydar Aliyev Centre, the Sumqayit History Museum and the moving Ali and Nino sculpture depicting the famous lovers of Azerbaijani literature.
