Feldkirch is the westernmost city in Austria, located in the province of Vorarlberg directly on the borders of Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Founded in 1218 by the Counts of Montfort, the city has meticulously preserved its medieval character, featuring narrow alleys and historic shaded arcades. Overlooking the town is Schattenburg Castle, the former residence of the Montfort dynasty, which now houses a significant regional museum. For centuries, Feldkirch served as a prominent center for education and religion, notably through the Jesuit college Stella Matutina, which attracted students from across Europe. Today, the city blends its historical fabric with contemporary culture, exemplified by the internationally acclaimed annual Poolbar Festival. Its strategic position in the Rhine Valley makes Feldkirch a vital transportation link and a gateway to the Swiss Alps.
