The Los Menhires Archaeological Park is located in El Mollar, Tucumán province, and houses a unique collection of over 120 monumental stone stelae. These monoliths, known as menhirs, were created by the Tafí culture, which flourished in the region between 300 BC and 800 AD. The stones are sculptures carved from granite, with some reaching heights of up to three meters, featuring intricate engravings of human faces, animals, and geometric patterns. Historically, these stelae likely held ritual significance related to fertility, ancestor worship, or astronomical observations. Originally scattered across the Tafí Valley, they were relocated to their current site in the 1970s to protect them from destruction and theft. The diversity of the depictions provides insight into the social and symbolic world of one of the oldest sedentary societies in northwestern Argentina. Today, the park serves as a vital cultural heritage site, offering a fascinating glimpse into the artistry and spirituality of early Andean peoples.
