M'banza Kongo (Angola)

Weather…

M'banza Kongo, located in Zaire Province, was the political and spiritual heart of the Kingdom of Kongo from the 14th to the 19th century, one of Central Africa's most powerful states. Situated on a plateau at an altitude of 570 meters, the city served as the residence of the Manikongo, the ruler of a territory spanning parts of modern-day Angola, DR Congo, Republic of Congo, and Gabon. Following the arrival of the Portuguese in the late 15th century, the city became a focal point for early Christian missions in Africa. A standout monument is the ruin of the Cathedral of the Holy Saviour of Congo (Kulumbimbi), built in 1491 and recognized as the oldest church in sub-Saharan Africa. M'banza Kongo is a unique example of cultural exchange and the intersection between African traditions and European influences. In 2017, the site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its exceptional historical significance. The area includes the royal palace grounds, the sacred Lumbu tree, and numerous archaeological sites.
