Cangandala National Park (Angola)

Weather…

Cangandala National Park is located in Malanje Province and, with an area of approximately 600 square kilometers, is the smallest national park in Angola. It was officially established on June 25, 1970, after functioning as a nature reserve since 1963. The park is globally renowned as the home of the Giant Sable Antelope (Palanca Negra Gigante), a national symbol of Angola that was long thought to be extinct. The landscape consists of a mix of open grasslands and miombo woodlands along the watercourses of the Cuije and Lombe rivers. Following the civil war, intensive conservation programs were launched to secure the remaining population of antelopes within a fenced sanctuary inside the park. The park plays a central role in nature conservation and the country's national identity.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from May to October provides the best wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources. During this period, the giant sable antelope is more frequently seen in open areas.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are prime times for spotting the giant sable antelope when they are most active. Midday heat drives most animals into shade, reducing visibility.
📜
Etiquette
Remain at least 50 meters from wildlife and never use flash photography, which can startle animals. Feeding or approaching antelopes is strictly forbidden to protect this endangered species.
🎒
What to bring
Bring binoculars with good magnification for distant spotting, a sturdy camera with zoom, and neutral-colored clothing. Water and sun protection are essential in the savanna heat.
🧭
Getting there
The park is accessed via a dirt road from Malanje town; a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended. Guided tours from Malanje or within the park provide necessary permits and local knowledge.
🦌
What to expect
The giant sable antelope is critically endangered and extremely elusive, so sightings are not guaranteed. Spending several days in the park and using experienced rangers greatly improves your chances.
