Khemissa (Algeria)

Weather…

Khemissa, ancient Thubursicum Numidarum, is a significant Roman archaeological site in northeastern Algeria, once a major urban center of Numidia. The city was strategically built on a hilltop and rose to prominence in the 2nd century AD when it was granted the status of a municipium under Emperor Trajan. Its most spectacular feature is the remarkably well-preserved Roman theater, which is built into the side of a hill and could seat up to 4,000 spectators. The site also has two forums, grand triumphal gates, and extensive public baths, signifying the city's great wealth and civic importance. Khemissa served as a vital crossroads for trade routes connecting Hippo Regius on the coast with the interior city of Theveste. During the Byzantine era, it was transformed into a fortified stronghold to protect the region from invasions. Today, the sprawling ruins set against the rolling green hills provide an authentic and evocative window into Roman-African provincial life.
