Great Mosque of Tlemcen (Algeria)

Weather…

The Great Mosque of Tlemcen is one of the oldest and most significant Islamic structures in the Maghreb, serving as a prime example of Almoravid architecture. Founded in 1082 by the Almoravid ruler Yusuf ibn Tashfin, the mosque was later expanded and extensively decorated under his son, Ali ibn Yusuf. Its mihrab, dating from 1136, is internationally renowned for its exquisite plasterwork and intricate Kufic inscriptions, considered among the finest in the Islamic world. A standout feature is the central dome, which features openwork ribs that allow light to filter beautifully into the prayer hall. The Zayyanid dynasty later added the characteristic brick minaret in the 13th century, enhancing the mosque's silhouette within the city. The design seamlessly blends North African traditions with Andalusian artistic influences, visible in the use of polylobed arches and geometric patterns. Throughout history, the mosque has remained Tlemcen's religious and intellectual cornerstone. Today, it is a protected national monument, celebrated for its timeless beauty and historical importance.
