Arch of Trajan of Timgad (Algeria)

Weather…

The Arch of Trajan in Timgad is a magnificent Roman triumphal arch and the most iconic landmark of the ancient city of Thamugadi. Although named after Emperor Trajan, who founded the colony in 100 AD, the arch was likely constructed in the late 2nd or early 3rd century. Built from local sandstone, it features three arched passageways: a large central one for wheeled traffic and two smaller lateral ones for pedestrians. Standing approximately 12 meters high, it marks the western end of the Decumanus Maximus, the city's primary east-west street. The facade is elegantly decorated with Corinthian columns and niches that once held statues of the imperial family. Its remarkable state of preservation is partly due to its incorporation into Byzantine-era fortifications. Today, the entire site of Timgad is a UNESCO World Heritage site, often referred to as the 'Pompeii of Africa,' with the Arch of Trajan standing as a testament to the grandeur of Roman urban planning in the African provinces.
