Hammam Essalihine
Hammam Essalihine, known in antiquity as Aquae Flavianae, is one of the most remarkable historical relics in Algeria. Built in the 1st century AD under the Flavian dynasty, the bath complex is located in the rugged Aurès Mountains near the town of Khenchela. What makes this place special is that the impressive circular and rectangular open-air pools made of massive stone blocks are still intact and in continuous operation after nearly two thousand years. The thermal water at about 70°C flows pure and mineral-rich directly into the ancient pools and cools in the fresh mountain air. The bath attracts hundreds of locals daily, who come for relaxation, religious reasons, or to heal respiratory and rheumatic ailments. The pools are surrounded by ancient Roman columns and walls, making bathing a real journey through time. Men and women bathe separately, often in shifts or in different parts of the complex. The atmosphere is lively, especially on weekends when families from all over the region arrive. Massages and traditional washings are offered around the pools. The site is located about 7 kilometers from the center of Khenchela at an altitude of nearly 1,000 meters. The climate in the Aurès Mountains can get cold in winter and snow often falls, making a hot bath in the ancient ruins an unforgettable contrasting experience. Hammam Essalihine is not just a place of healing, but a living piece of Roman history perfectly integrated into Algerian everyday life.
