The Balcons de Ghoufi offer one of the most striking views in Algeria. Over the millennia, the white Abiod River has carved a deep gorge into the Aurès Mountains, with steep walls plunging up to 200 meters. Clinging to the cliffs are the ruins of old Berber villages and cave dwellings, carved directly into the rock. The area is not only of scenic beauty but also bears witness to the adaptability of the local population to the harsh conditions. Date palms and pomegranate trees grow on the valley floor, providing a stark contrast to the barren, ochre-colored rocks of the canyon. Ghoufi is located on the road between Biskra and Batna and is a popular destination for hikers and photographers. The best time to explore the gorge is during the mild months of spring and autumn, when temperatures are pleasant for hiking down into the river valley.
