Belezma National Park (Algeria)

Weather…

Belezma National Park is located in the Batna Province of northeastern Algeria and serves as a vital ecological link between the humid coastal regions and the arid Sahara. Spanning approximately 26,250 hectares, the park encompasses the Belezma Mountains, part of the Aurès massif. The area is particularly famous for its extensive stands of Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica), which grow here at their southern limit of distribution and exhibit high resilience to the semi-arid climate. Geographically, the park is characterized by rugged peaks, such as Djebel Touggourt, and deeply cut valleys that create a variety of microclimates. In addition to its impressive flora, the park is home to a rich fauna, including Cuvier's gazelle, and over 300 different plant species. Historically, the region is of great significance as it contains numerous ruins from the Roman era, indicating a long history of settlement in these strategically located mountains. Established in 1984 to protect the unique ecosystem from overgrazing and soil erosion, the park now serves as a model for sustainable nature conservation in mountainous regions.
