The Belsh Lakes are located on the Dumre Plateau in central Albania, representing one of the most significant karst landscapes in the Balkan Peninsula. The plateau features a total of 84 lakes, with Lake Belsh being the most prominent, situated adjacent to the town of the same name. These lakes were formed through the dissolution of gypsum and limestone layers, resulting in circular depressions known as dolines. The region has a long history of human habitation dating back to the Illyrian period, evidenced by archaeological finds such as the tomb of the 'Prince of Belsh'. In recent years, significant investments in infrastructure have turned the area into a burgeoning tourist hub, featuring lakeside promenades and cycling paths.
