Amu Darya Basin Oil Fields (Afghanistan)

Weather…

The Amu Darya basin in northern Afghanistan, which spans several provinces, is home to the country's most significant oil deposits. After decades of limited exploration and production, the Afghan government signed contracts with international consortia to advance the development of these fields. The largest project, Qashqari, is operated in cooperation with a Chinese state-owned company. Commercial production began in the early 2010s, marking an important milestone for the Afghan economy as it created a domestic source of oil and reduced dependence on imports. The extracted crude oil is partially processed locally in small refineries. The development of these oil fields is associated with significant logistical and security challenges. Nevertheless, the oil in the Amu Darya basin represents one of the most important potential sources of revenue for the state and is a key element in the strategy of using the country's natural resources for economic reconstruction.
