Khost Pine Forests (Afghanistan)

Weather…

In the mountainous and forested regions of eastern Afghanistan, particularly in the provinces of Khost, Paktia, and Paktika, grows Pinus gerardiana, a species of pine that produces extremely valuable pine nuts. These nuts, known locally as 'Jalghoza,' are a sought-after and expensive delicacy and represent one of the most important legal sources of income for local communities. The harvest is a dangerous and arduous task that requires great skill, as collectors must climb the tall trees to pick the cones. Afterward, the cones are often heated over a fire to open them and release the precious nuts. Jalghoza pine nuts are known for their rich, buttery flavor and are a significant export item for Afghanistan. Unfortunately, these ancient pine forests are severely threatened by illegal logging and poor management, which endangers the long-term sustainability of this valuable resource.
