Tora Bora Massif (Afghanistan)

Weather…

Tora Bora, meaning 'Black Dust,' is a cave complex situated within the Spīn Ghar (White Mountains) of eastern Afghanistan, near the Khyber Pass and the border with Pakistan. The site gained global fame in late 2001 during the Battle of Tora Bora, when U.S.-led coalition forces launched an offensive to capture or kill al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, who was believed to be hiding there. The terrain is exceptionally rugged, mountainous, and forested, featuring a labyrinthine network of natural caves and man-made tunnels. These fortifications were originally expanded by the Mujahideen with CIA support during the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s. The battle ultimately failed to secure bin Laden, and the event remains a controversial and much-analyzed episode of the war in Afghanistan.
