Minaret of Chakari (Afghanistan)

Weather…

The Minaret of Chakari was a famous stupa-pillar from the Kushan Empire era, located southeast of Kabul. It was likely erected in the 1st century AD and served as a Buddhist victory monument and a guidepost for caravans on the ancient Silk Road. The pillar was artfully decorated with Hellenistic and Indian motifs and was an outstanding example of Gandhara art. Originally very tall, it was damaged by earthquakes over the centuries. Unfortunately, what remained of this priceless historical monument was destroyed in March 1998 during the civil war. Its loss represents a major blow to Afghanistan's cultural heritage. Today, only historical photographs and accounts remain to remind us of this once-magnificent structure.
