It experienced a particular heyday under the rule of Shah Rukh in the 15th century. The massive structure, with its 18 towers, served not only military purposes but also as a royal residence and government center. After years of decay due to wars, the fortress has been extensively restored in recent decades with international aid and now houses a museum that documents the rich history of the region.
