Citadel of Herat (Afghanistan)

Weather…

The Citadel of Herat, known locally as Qala Ikhtyaruddin, is an impressive fortress in the heart of the ancient city of Herat. Its history spans over 2,300 years, dating back to the time of Alexander the Great, who had a first fortification built on this site around 330 BC. Over the centuries, the citadel was destroyed and rebuilt by countless empires, including the Seljuks, Ghurids, and Timurids, which led to its complex architectural layering. It experienced a particular heyday under the rule of Shah Rukh in the 15th century. The massive structure, with its 18 towers, served not only military purposes but also as a royal residence and government center. After years of decay due to wars, the fortress has been extensively restored in recent decades with international aid and now houses a museum that documents the rich history of the region.
