Minaret of Jam (Afghanistan)

Weather…

The Minaret of Jam, a solitary jewel of Ghurid architecture, rises majestically in a remote valley in the Afghan province of Ghor. Built around 1190, the 65-meter-tall tower is made entirely of baked bricks and is renowned for its exceptionally intricate decorations. The exterior is covered with stucco, terracotta, and glazed tiles that form elaborate geometric patterns, calligraphy in Kufic and Naskhi scripts, and verses from the Quran. It is believed to have served either as a victory tower to commemorate the conquest of Ghazni or as the minaret for a mosque that has never been found. Due to its isolated location, it was largely unknown to the outside world until the 19th century. Today, the minaret is severely threatened by erosion and the proximity of the Hari Rud river and is on UNESCO's List of World Heritage in Danger, requiring urgent conservation efforts.
