It was established in 1891 by the Pioneer Column under the direction of Cecil Rhodes, marking it as the first permanent European settlement in what was then Mashonaland. The fort was originally designed as a defensive structure to provide security for settlers during the early stages of colonization. Notable features of the complex include the distinctive wooden bell tower and the substantial defensive walls, parts of which are still accessible to visitors. The city of Masvingo grew around this site, originally bearing the name Fort Victoria in honor of the British monarch.
