Established in 1890 as Fort Victoria, Masvingo holds the distinction of being the oldest colonial-era settlement in Zimbabwe. It serves as the capital of Masvingo Province and functions as a vital logistical hub for the southeastern region of the country. The town's layout reflects its colonial origins, with several preserved administrative buildings from the late 19th century. Its global significance is primarily tied to the Great Zimbabwe National Monument, located approximately 28 kilometers to the south. These ancient stone ruins, an UNESCO World Heritage site, were the capital of a vast Iron Age empire. Beyond its historical appeal, Masvingo is a center for the cattle ranching and mining industries. Tourists often use the city as a base to explore Lake Mutirikwi, the country's largest inland dam, which has diverse birdwatching and water-based activities amidst scenic granite hills.
