Mazowe Dam (Zimbabwe)

Weather…

Mazowe Dam is located approximately 40 kilometers north of Harare on the Mazowe River, standing as a historical testament to early hydraulic engineering in Zimbabwe. Built between 1918 and 1920 by the British South Africa Company, its primary purpose was to provide irrigation for the extensive citrus estates in the Mazowe Valley. The dam wall is an impressive concrete arch structure, rising about 37 meters from its foundation. The resulting reservoir not only supports agriculture but also provides a vital habitat for waterfowl and various freshwater fish species. In the early 1960s, the wall was heightened to increase the reservoir's capacity, meeting the rising demand for irrigation water. The lake's surroundings are characterized by rolling hills and thick vegetation, making it a prominent recreational spot. Today, the dam continues to play a central role in the economy of the Mazowe District, particularly in the production of oranges and lemons for international export.
