Lundazi Castle Hotel, often simply called 'The Castle,' is a unique architectural landmark in the Eastern Province of Zambia. Built in 1948 by Errol Button, the British District Commissioner of the time, the building reflects his personal fascination with medieval European architecture. Constructed in a Norman style, the castle features crenelated battlements, prominent turrets, and even a moat, standing in stark contrast to its African surroundings. Button utilized local materials and labor to bring his vision to life, famously naming the main tower 'Rumpelstiltskin.' Originally intended as a rest house for traveling government officials, it now functions as a hotel and serves as the primary symbol of Lundazi town. The castle overlooks an artificial lake, also commissioned by Button, which enhances the pretty setting. Despite its colonial origins, the building is a source of local pride and remains a popular stop for travelers venturing into the remote eastern regions. It serves as a lasting monument to the eccentricities of individual colonial administrators.
