Centenario Stadium (Uruguay)

Weather…

The Estadio Centenario in Montevideo is a temple of world football and a national monument of Uruguay. It was built in a record time of just nine months in 1930 to commemorate the centenary of Uruguay's first constitution and to host the inaugural FIFA World Cup. Architect Juan Antonio Scasso designed the stadium to hold up to 100,000 spectators. Its elliptical shape and the imposing 'Tower of Tributes' (Torre de los Homenajes), which stands 100 meters tall, make it an architectural landmark. The stadium was the stage for the first-ever World Cup final, where Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 to become the first world champions. On July 18, 1983, it was declared a Historical Monument of World Football by FIFA, the only such building in the world. The stadium also houses the Football Museum, which chronicles the rich history of Uruguayan and South American football. To this day, the Centenario remains the primary home of the Uruguayan national football team and a place of pilgrimage for football fans worldwide.
