Pittamiglio Castle (Uruguay)

Weather…

Pittamiglio Castle in Montevideo is an architectural oddity born from the eccentric vision of architect Humberto Pittamiglio. Construction began in 1911 and continued until his death in 1966, as Pittamiglio constantly remodeled and added to the building. The result is a labyrinthine structure, full of corridors, secret doors, and a multitude of architectural styles, from medieval to modern. Pittamiglio was a follower of alchemy, and the castle is filled with symbols related to his esoteric beliefs, including the rose, the Grail, and Templar symbols. Its facade, facing the Rambla of Montevideo, is crowned by a prominent replica of the Winged Victory (Victoria Alada). Inside, the castle is a bewildering network of rooms connected in unexpected ways, supposedly designed to channel positive energies. After his death, as per his will, the castle became a cultural center and museum. It has guided tours that explore the architect's life, his alchemical interests, and the countless secrets hidden within the building's walls.
