Vylkove, frequently referred to as the 'Venice of Ukraine,' is situated in the Odesa Oblast within the Danube Delta, bordering Romania. The town was founded in 1746 by Lipovans, a community of Russian Orthodox Old Believers who fled religious persecution in the Russian Empire. Its unique geography is defined by an extensive network of canals that serve as the primary thoroughfares instead of traditional streets, with residents using long, narrow boats for transportation. Vylkove lies at the heart of the Danube Biosphere Reserve, an ecologically vital region home to a vast array of unique flora and fauna. The local economy traditionally relies on fishing and the cultivation of strawberries and grapes on the fertile silt of the delta's islands. Because of its historical isolation, the Lipovan community has successfully preserved its archaic culture, language, and distinct religious rites. The town is located near 'Kilometer Zero,' where the Danube River finally empties into the Black Sea.
