Karuma Bridge (Uganda)

Weather…

The Karuma Bridge is a vital piece of infrastructure spanning the Victoria Nile in northern Uganda. Located near the Karuma Falls, a stretch of torrential rapids, it is an essential component of the main transport route connecting Kampala to Gulu and the northern part of the country. The original bridge was constructed in the 1960s and played a crucial role in trade, transport, and national integration. Its strategic location made it a significant point of interest during various periods of conflict in Uganda's history. In recent years, a new, more robust cable-stayed bridge has been constructed adjacent to the old one as part of the Karuma Hydroelectric Power Project. This new structure is designed to handle increased traffic and improve connectivity to the economically emerging northern Uganda region. The bridge is situated at the edge of Murchison Falls National Park, and travellers are often treated to sightings of wildlife, particularly baboons that frequent the area. It is thus not just a transport link but also a gateway to one of Uganda's most important natural landscapes.
