Lake Victoria (Uganda)

Weather…

Lake Victoria, known locally as 'Nalubaale', is Africa's largest lake by area and the world's second-largest freshwater lake. It is shared by three countries, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya, with a total surface area of approximately 59,947 square kilometers. The lake is one of the primary sources of the Nile River, specifically the White Nile, which originates at Jinja, Uganda. Geologically, the lake is relatively young at about 400,000 years old, filling a shallow depression. It plays a vital role in the region's economy, supporting millions of people through fishing, agriculture, and transport. Ecologically, the lake has faced significant challenges, including the introduction of the invasive Nile perch in the 1950s, which led to the extinction of hundreds of endemic cichlid species. Pollution and water hyacinth infestation are other severe issues. Despite these problems, the lake remains a site of immense natural beauty and biological importance, home to hippos, crocodiles, and diverse birdlife.
