Lake Tuz (Turkey)

Weather…

Lake Tuz (Tuz Gölü) is the second-largest lake in Turkey and one of the largest hypersaline lakes in the world. Located on the Central Anatolian plateau, it covers an area of approximately 1,665 square kilometers, though its size fluctuates significantly based on seasonal rainfall and evaporation. With a salinity level reaching 32.9%, the lake provides roughly 40% of Turkey's total salt production. During the dry summer months, most of the water evaporates, leaving behind a thick white salt crust that can reach up to 30 cm in depth, often taking on a striking pink hue caused by the Dunaliella salina algae. Despite the extreme conditions, the lake is a critical breeding ground for the Mediterranean's largest colonies of Greater Flamingos, which nest in its shallow waters. In 2000, Lake Tuz was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in recognition of its unique ecological value. The lake remains a vital part of the regional ecosystem, although it is increasingly threatened by climate change and excessive water extraction.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Lake Tuz is very easily reached via the highway connecting Ankara and Aksaray. Many visitors stop at roadside rest areas that provide straightforward access to the vast salt flats, particularly on the northern and eastern shores.
📅
Best season
Summer months are spectacular when the water evaporates, leaving behind a walkable salt crust. In spring, the lake fills with shallow water, creating beautiful reflections, and this is the time when many flamingos nest here.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is absolutely flat, consisting of either a hard salt crust or a very thin layer of water depending on the season. The ground beneath the salt crust can be muddy, so one should be careful when walking out onto it.
🎒
What to bring
Sunglasses are indispensable due to the extreme brightness of the white salt surface. In summer, walking barefoot or in flip-flops on the salt is recommended, while waterproof shoes are needed for the shallow areas in spring.
🅿️
Parking
Large parking lots are available at the tourist access points and restaurants along the main highway. These are usually well-marked and provide a safe way to leave your car for a brief exploration of the salt flats.
⚠️
Safety
The sun can be extremely intense on the salt flats, so strong sun protection is vital. Be careful not to walk too far into areas where the salt crust becomes thinner to avoid sinking into the underlying mud.
⏱️
Time needed
A short stop of 30 to 60 minutes is often enough to experience the vastness and take photos. Those wishing to watch the sunset or hike further out should plan for about 2 hours for their stay.
