Ihlara Valley is a striking canyon approximately 15 kilometers long in Turkey's Aksaray province, carved into volcanic rock by the Melendiz River. The formation of the valley is closely linked to the eruptions of nearby Mount Hasan, whose lava flows provided the foundation for today's topography. What makes the valley globally unique are the hundreds of rock-cut churches and cave dwellings carved into the steep walls by Byzantine monks starting in the 4th century. These churches, such as the Ağaçaltı or Kokar Church, house well-preserved frescoes depicting biblical scenes in a distinct Cappadocian style. For centuries, the valley served as a sanctuary for Christian communities, and today it features a fascinating blend of nature and history. The microclimate inside the canyon allows for lush vegetation that stands in stark contrast to the barren Anatolian plateau. Visitors can explore the valley on well-maintained hiking trails that run along the river, providing insights into ancient ways of life.

Getting there

The valley is located in the Aksaray province and is easily accessible by car or tour bus from main Cappadocian towns like Göreme or Nevşehir.

Spring and autumn provide the best temperatures for hiking; the valley provides shade in summer, but the surrounding plateau can be extremely hot during the day.

The trail runs along the river at the bottom of a deep canyon; the path is relatively flat and well-maintained, though there are many stairs at the main entrance points.

What to bring

Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking boots are sufficient; bring a camera for the historic rock-cut churches and a bottle of water for the walk between entrance gates.

Formal parking lots are available at the main entrances in Ihlara village, Belisirma, and near the Selime Monastery; small fees usually apply at these designated spots.
