Mount Hasan (Turkey)

Weather…

Mount Hasan (Hasan Dağı) is a prominent inactive stratovolcano located in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey, rising between the provinces of Aksaray and Niğde. With an elevation of 3,268 meters, it is the second-highest peak in Central Anatolia and serves as a major landmark of the Anatolian plateau. The mountain features two main volcanic cones, known as Big Hasan and Little Hasan, which were shaped by multiple eruptions during the late Pleistocene and Holocene epochs. It holds significant archaeological importance; a mural discovered at the Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük, dating to approximately 6600 BC, is believed by many researchers to depict a twin-peaked eruption of Mount Hasan, making it one of the oldest recorded volcanic representations in human history. Today, the mountain is a popular spot for mountaineering, paragliding, and winter sports. Its slopes are covered with oak forests at lower elevations, and the fertile volcanic soil supports various agricultural activities in the surrounding plains.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Mount Hasan is best accessed from Aksaray or Niğde. A road leads to the mountain's foothills, with the village of Helvadere serving as a popular starting point for hikes and climbs of the twin-peaked summit.
📅
Best season
The best time for a climb is from June to September, when the snow has melted and trails are navigable. In winter, the mountain is a challenging destination for experienced ski tourers and climbers due to often extreme conditions.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is characterized by volcanic rock, scree slopes, and steep ascents toward the summit. Lower slopes offer green pastures in spring, while the upper part of the mountain is barren and rocky, creating an impressive volcanic landscape.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy mountain boots with good traction are essential for the loose volcanic rock. Additionally, hikers should carry telescopic poles to ease knee strain during descent, along with adequate wind and weather protection for the exposed summit.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors can find parking in the village of Helvadere or at small, informal spaces at the end of the navigable roads leading toward the mountain huts. It is advisable to park in well-visible spots and leave no valuables in sight.
⚠️
Safety
As the mountain is very exposed, strong winds and sudden fog can make orientation difficult. It is vital to realistically assess your own abilities and initiate a descent immediately if there are signs of an approaching storm.
⏱️
Time needed
A climb to the summit and back typically takes 6 to 9 hours, depending on fitness levels. Hikers who only wish to enjoy the lower slopes and nature can plan for approximately 3 to 5 hours.
